Lymphoedema Clinic
Lymphoedema (the excess accumulation of fluid in the tissues of
body) may sometimes occur following damage to the lymphatic system
in the body. This may occur from the effects of disease and/or the
treatments associated with this as for example in Breast Cancer.
Patients who have developed this condition as a result of cancer
can be treated at our Lymphoedema Clinic.
The clinic is available on a Wednesday afternoon most weeks of
the year. Our Lymphoedema Therapist is available to treat patients
who present with mild-moderate symptoms. We refer patients with
more complex needs to the Lymphoedema Clinical Nurse Specialist
for Gloucestershire and work under the guidance of this Specialist
Practitioner. Any Health Care Professional can make referrals to
the service.
The service aims to provide support and advice for patients experiencing
the effects of lymphoedema and therefore provides a service which
includes:
- A comprehensive assessment of the problem, measurement and
fitting of garments as and when appropriate;
- Education and advice to patients and/or carers on skincare,
simple lymph drainage massage techniques and exercises, which
can help to minimise the problem;
- The Lymphoedema Therapist will also provide telephone support
and advice to other professionals.
