Positioning statement

Cotswold Care Hospice is an independent charity. We are one of three adult hospices in Gloucestershire. We employ more than 70 staff and we are supported by more than 600 volunteers. We serve a population of 568,000 people, covering the whole of Gloucestershire.  All our care and services are provided free of charge to more than 500 patients, families and carers every year. Services are provided at our Minchinhampton site and in people’s own homes.

The hospice movement

The first modern hospice in the UK hospice opened in 1967 in London. Cotswold Care Hospice was launched in 1987 and opened in 1990. There are now more than 220 local hospices across the UK.

The hospice movement has made rapid medical and social advances over the past 40 years both changing the way people are treated when faced with a life-limiting illness.

Any of us might need hospice care one day. One in three of us will develop some form of cancer during our lifetime. One in seven in the UK is affected by lung disease. Those affected by a life-limiting disease could be a mother, a grandparent, a partner, a child, a friend or a a colleague.

Across the country more than £400 million must be raised each year to keep hospices going. This makes local charitable hospice care the largest fundraising cause in the UK. The government contributes less than 10 per cent of running costs at Cotswold Care Hospice.
